I have been searching yard sales and thrift stores for the perfect bike (that I can afford). I now have a few $40 bikes and have learned a great deal from this forum on how to fix and maintain them. Thank you all very much.
I have a very nice Raleigh C-30 that fits me perfect and is in pretty decent shape. I just don't like the 15 speed Shimano SIS grip shift system. I also have a Fuji sandblaster that has a nice Shimano 100GS 21 speed thumb-shift system that I love. I would like to put the 100GS on the Raleigh. The Fuji has 26" wheels and the raleigh has 700C wheels. I brought both bikes to my local bike shop, and without looking at them he told me I was better off buying a new bike. His new bikes start at $329. I can afford to spend around $100 to upgrade the Raleigh. Can anyone give me some advice?
I think the Raleigh has a steel frame so the rear triangle could be dpread to accept the Fuji hub. Sheldon Browns website will tell you how to do this. You would then have to get the Raleigh rim laced onto the Fuji hub. Ask your LBS to quote on this, or you could do it yourself for the cost of the spokes if you have plenty of time and patience
