wheel size
a bit new to all this fancy biking jazz. i just bought a bike with 27" wheels. now i am trying to figure out what size they are in mm (aka the 650 or 700 typically). however, the wheels say 650 / 27", but 27" is 686 mm, no anywhere close. im very confused right now. any explanation of these sizing conventions would be a lot of help to me!!! thanks.

There's a good amount of info on this topic on the Harris Cyclery site (aka Sheldon Brown). Here's a link:

Look for something that indicates what the bead diameter is. This may be on the rim usu. in the form of nnn x nn (e.g. 622x15). In this case the 622 is the bead diameter in mm and indicates that the nominal size is 700C. The 15 is the interior width of the rim in mm.
The tire should also have some markings on it, usu. in the form nn-nnn (e.g. 23-622). The first number is the width of the tire in mm, the second is the bead diameter in mm. The bead diameter for 650C is 571mm and the bead diameter for 27" is 630mm.
