Rim mirror polish-->bad braking?
I built my first wheelset about a year and a half ago, and have used it heavily. Now the rims, which were formerly anodized, are quite shiny. Probably shouldn't of chosen anodized for a bike with rim brakes, but what can you do.
Anyway, I seem to recall much sharper braking in the past. Maybe its my imagination. I imagine that brake-polishing rims makes the barking less strong, but is this like a BIG factor, or something imperceptible? I'd answer my own question, but I don't trust my own memory.
Is there something that one can do (with a file or with sandpaper) to make the braking surfaces better again?

Yep , +1 on cleaning your rims with scotch brite pad and also, take the brake pads off and lightly sand them or better yet buff them on a buffing wheel if your have access to one.

How old and worn are the brake pads? Age hardened and/or dirty pads don't work as well as new clean ones.

Thanks all. My pads are fine, but a bit of sanding prolly couldn't hurt. I'll take the scotch brite to the rims. I just wanted to check and make sure that consensus opinion wasn't completely "new rims."
