Help me please

This might sound thick but i need some help in order to get to work tomorrow!!!!!

Everytime I stop pedaling my chain makes a funny noise and the gears at the back start to move. Also when the bike is moving without me riding it (pushing it) the pedals go round on there own.

Can somebody please help me with how to fix it????

Its just a normal 12 gear mountain bike but i'm a bit of an amatuer.

Reply on here or direct to my email on c.russell1@ntlworld.com

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Carl

The cluster of 6 cogs that the chain runs on at the back are mounted on a "freewheel" which rotates semi-independently of the wheel. Normally, a ratchet mechanism allows the freewheel to drive the wheel when you pedal, but to rest when you stop pedalling. Something is interfering with the resting part.

If you can see something like string or straw jammed between the innermost gear and the spokes, you might be able to carefully pull it out and fix the problem, but if whatever is causing the problem is hidden inside the freewheel where it connects to the hub, you probably need professional help, because you usually need specific tools and training to remove a freewheel.

Your freewheel is probably all gunked up and needs to be cleaned out and regreased. If you don't have any experience working with it then you should take it to a shop.

LUBE: 1) your chain 2) the jockey wheels on the rear derailleur 3) most particularly lube the freewheel (or unlikely, the free hub) ie: the junction between the rotating part of the rear cog cluster and the central nonrotating part. Sounds like too much friction/stiction in the drive mechanism. While you are at it lube the hubs, headset and bottom bracket. For how to: www.parktool.com click on the top right box called Repair Help. Then scroll down to the bike and mouse around over the bike to bring up maintenance methods and lubing of the various parts.

Could also be the plastic thingy, 'spoke/protector/dork disc' that's come off the spokes and is rubbing against the freewheel - enough to cause 'fixwheel'.
