Compact crankset with braze-on FD issues

I plan on replacing my 105 crankset with a Ritchey Compact Pro (50/34 instead of 53/39). I plan on putting a new BB, chain, and rear cassette on as well. My FD is a braze-on. Will I be able to lower it enough to accomodate the smaller diameter gear in front? I would like to avoid replacing the FD with a clamp-on if I can. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I don't have an answer to your question but if you haven't seen their prices yet I haven't found any lower than those at AEBike. If you are a Performance fan they will price match. I got the WCS and love it but my frame uses a clamp on FD.

What FD will you be using? I believe the CT specific braze on FDs have taken into account your issue but again I don't have any direct expierence.

It's usually not a problem. How do you replace a braze on with a clamp type anyway?? FD needs to drop about 6mm to be in the same relative position wih respect to the smaller ring.

It could be a problem depending on your exact frame. Look close at your current FD position and try to judge if you could drop it 6mm as mentioned by Sydney.

Thanks for the advice. Sydney, is it possible to replace a braze-on with a clamp-on FD? I was under the assumption that it could be done, but we all know what happens when you assume.

Not usually. Can't do it if the tab is brazed to the frame( I've seen some ground off, but it's ugly). Maybe if the tab is bolted on and the settube allows the use of a standard clamp.

So if I can't lower my current FD 6mm, I'm pretty much dead in the water?

A fd will still usually shift if a bit high. But it can be less than optimum.

Is it safe to take a Dremel to the slot on the bracket of the FD to allow for it to go lower, or will this significantly affect the integrity of the bracket?

Not at all, braze-on compact specific FD's take into account that you are installing it on a braze-on type of mount. The rear of the der drops down to take up the space left by the smaller dia chainring. Check out Campy's site for a much better description than I just gave.

It would still be better though to be able to drop the FD all the way down to fit optimally over the big-ring. A 6mm drop should be easily accomodated by the braze-on tab. Just check to make sure, and yes, you can use a dremel to extend the slot if necessary.
