Strongarm II Crankarm removal question

OK, I'm trying to remove the cranks on my wife's '03 Epic WSD but the damn things don't seem to come off. According to the S website, they are XT Octalink splined. My bike's XTs have a screw that doubles as a crank puller. The ones on the Strongarm just unscrew leaving the crank in place.

So - given that this is an Octalink, anyone have any tips or recommendations on how to budge thse damn things? Is my screw messed up since it doesn't ease the crankarm off?

Found water in the frame and I want to clean out the bottom bracket housing. Already pulled the fork and cleaned out that part of the frame. I'm pretty sure the Cane Creek headset is shot, but I'll get her a CK replacement. I'm hoping I can clean up the BB and reuse it rather than replacing it.

There are octalink crank bolts that are self extracting, and them that are not. For the 'are not kind' you need a proper crankpuller for the hollow spindle Checkwww.parktool.com tools. If you have a puller for square taper spindles,it's often workable if you drop a bolt in the octalink spindle for it to push on.

Hmmm.... hadn't thought of putting a bolt in the spindle. Was trying to think of something I could use. I'll have to go see if I have one. Or a washer.
