square taper bottom bracket question

ok - so whats the name of the thing that screws into a bb that the crank bolt attaches to?

It depends. If it is an "adjustable" type of bottom bracket, then you can replace just the spindle. If it is a "cartridge bearing" type of bottom bracket, you have to purchase a complete bottom bracket.

I think you may be looking for a bottom bracket (spindle + cups + bearings) that screws into the bottom bracket shell on your frame. You can find these at any LBS and most likely one that will work for your bike and crankset.
