Need help setting up Campy drivetrain
 

Ok I just converted my bike from ShimaNo to Campagnolo. I have built and tuned Shimano systems many times and never had an issue like this. Looking for some help here. Bike: Salsa LaRaza Components: 2005 Record Ergo levers, 2005 Centaur CT FD and short cage RD, Veloce 12-25 cassette, Wipperman 10SO chain (yes I know they say this is their Shimano 10s chain but with the difference being the width from the Campy chain it shouldn't be an issue as the new Campy Ultra chain is narrower).

So I had my chain off so that I could remove all the goo that comes on a new chain and put good lube on it. While it was off I went through the Campy directions for how to setup the shifting of the RD. #1 turn the pulley tension screw all the way clock wise. #2 with the cable tension loose set the outer limit screw with the upper pulley centered on the smallest cog of the cassette. #3 index up to the 4th cog (3 clicks on the shifter) and use the tension adjustment to center the upper pulley on the 4th cog. #4 shift to largest cog and set the inner limit screw and adjust the pulley tension screw if the upper pulley interferes with the large cog (it doesn't).

Ok so I did all that and with the chain off I indexed through the gears and it sure looks like it lines up right. Put the chain back on, lube it up and it shifts like crap. =/ Wont make the complete jump up to the next larger cog…if I push a bit more on the shifter (not to the next click) I can get it to go up and the down shift seems fine. If I add enough tension to the cable to get the up shifts smooth the down shifts aren't correct.

Got any thoughts?

Cable attached to the RD in the correct way? Assuming everything is right, then final cable tension may be as critical as a click or two in at the RD adjuster.

I believe so, just like they show in the manual anyway.


Ok I will go after it with a bit finer touch. When trying to get the up shift (more tension) I was adding a half turn or more until I got it to shift so maybe I am just overshooting it.

I have always found that Campa instructions for the RD don't work exactly right for me. Friends have verified this as well, though notes to Campa about this have not even received a response. :D

For both my 9s and 10s setups, I find that doing the alignment on the fifth cog rather than the fourth always works better as a starting point.

Is the retaining clip on the back side of the derailleur still in place? It should be.
Was the shifter in the small cog position before attaching the cable?

Also, just in case, loosen up the limit screws until you get the tension right then tighten them. Sometimes a limit screw that is way off will mess things up. Normally, if I set the rear shifter for the smallest cog, loosen the cable then retighten with the jockey wheels under the small cog, I will be pretty close to good tension. It usually only takes a click or two to tweak it in. By the way, the Campy drivetrains usually install easier for me than the Shimano. Good luck.

That would be the very first place I'd look......making sure the cable is seated in the groove... :D

In the light of your recent experience, why did you make a point of saying "ShimaNo"?
