    rust?

I have an ancient cruiser that I was given to overhaul. It is compeletely covered in rust. Frame, wheel, spokes, everything. It doesn't really affect the performance, but it looks terrible. How do I get it off?

A couple of toothbrushes, rags and Naval Jelly works for me. I cleaned up an old ten speed for a friend with it in about the same condition you are describing. Get gloves and do it outside. Cleaned it up really nice. Pretty cheap also.

Also, make sure the rust on the spokes is superficial and does not affect wheels strength.

I have a 1940's Columbia that I restored. What I did to remove the old rust was have the frame dipped in acid, and repaint it. Your local shop or auto parts store can refer you to someone that does this. I also replaced every last component with brand new light weight stuff. It still weighs at least 38 pounds, but thats not bad for a 22 pound frame.
