It's times like these that i miss sydney. I am looking to order this derailleur. It is for a 9 speed. If i remember correctly, it should work with 8 speed ok...correct?

There won't be an issue of the 8 speed chain being too wide for the "cage" of the rear der. will there?

Shouldn't be any problem using that derailleur on your 8-speed setup.
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html (search the page for "derailler")

From that page: Note, also that rear derailers do not care how many gears you have. You do not need to have a so-called "10-speed" derailer to use a 10-speed cassette. This is true of all Shimano derailers with the exception of 1996 and earlier (pre-9-speed) Dura-Ace units.

FWIW, I have a Deore 9-speed derailler being used with an 8-speed cassette and shifter - NO problems!

I'm using a Deore LX low-normal der. (long cage), w/ a 11-34 8-speed cassette. No problems so far, even with the IG 8-speed chain.
