Clarity is lacking.
Do you mean big ring in front and 5th (from bottom, from top) in back?
How many speeds?
What sort of setup (roadbike, mountain bike, bike from kmart?)
What jumps around?
When you say that the pedals freewheel, do you mean that the cranks jsut spin?

What's your setup? If your chain is jumping when it's in your most frequently-used cogs, it could be that the cogs are starting to get worn-out. This will be particularly noticeable if you've got a new chain. But your description is rather unclear. Can you tell us more?

This is common if you install a new chain on worn out cogs. Or you may simply need a shift cable adjustment.

sorry guys. im on a road bike with 2 chain rings on the front and 10 on the back. the bike is about 4 days old and on the 4 largest cogs on the back groupset, the chain will jump up or down a cog or just sort of freeze, or the chain doesnt connect with anything and my front crank freewheels and is most uncomfortable. hope this helps

Try adjusting the shifter cable tension (where the cable goes into the rear derailler) 1/4 turn in either direction. Better idea is to take the bike back to the place you bought it and get them to adjust. Could also be a bent derailler hanger.

Also be sure you have a 10-speed chain. The problem in the rear sounds like a need for a shift cable tension. When the cranks turn and the chain is not engaged is the chain spinning around the cassette cogs or is it lifting off of the front chainrings?
If you bought the bike from a bike shop you should get a free tuneup including cable adjustments.

on a new bike, the cables will strench out. turn the cable adjusters.
