Bent Fork

I was ridding this past summer, and was hit by a car backing out of a driveway. The front wheel, brakes and fork are pretty messed up. I am picking up a new wheel from work, but I was wondering if I could just replace the fork with one from another (older) bike I have in the garage? Is there anything I should know before I remove the fork?

Oh, my name is Jay and this is my first post here. Nice to meet you all

If the length & dia of the steerer tube is sufficient to allow installation of the headset bearings it should be OK. The trail of the tire contact point behind the steering axis may not be exactly the same. This would result in either twitchier or more stable steering. So watch out for this on your first ride - you dont want to be taken by surprise. I hope the car driver is paying for your repairs.

The wheels are the same size.

The driver isn't paying for jack since he took off. The only info I could give the cops was the make of car since the guy had no back plate.

If the car was backing out of the driveway, couldn't it mean that he/she lives there?

It was more of a one lane firelane that has about 25 houses on it. Not to sure why he was backing out of it and not driving straight out. The cops checked the lane out and everything as did I for a bit, and the car was never seen again. The lane is actually just around the corner from my house.

If the impact was strong enough to trash the wheel and fork there is a good chance the frame is also bent.
Look for cracked paint on the downtube about 2" down from the headset.
Have the frame checked by someone that knows what to look for before buying/installing new parts.
Been there, felt the pain.

Enjoy

I agree with powers2b, give the frame a good look to check for damage.

If its a steel fork (doesn't work for aluminum or any of the exotics) and the hit was not that bad, you can bend it back. If its less than say a centimeter of bend, give it a try.

Thanks for the info guys, I am going to give the frame a close inspection.

The fork is bent pretty bad. It is pinched pretty good, not even worth trying to fix, I will just replace it and give the bike a new paint job

Well I tried the fork from my older bike, and no luck, the threaded neck on it is not long enough for the frame, so the threads do not come out the top. Anyone know where I could score a used fork? I am going to check out ebay now.

So just out of lurker's curiosity, what would be an easy way of measuring this?

I found a fork, but I need a little help with the dimensions. Here is what the add said

"RST SUSPENSION FORK WITH A 8 1/4 STEER 1 1/8 HEAD TUBE WITH DISC BRAKE MOUNTS"

Now is the 8 1/4 Steer, the neck of the fork? And what is the 1 1/8 head tube?
