solid axle to hollow Surly old hub?
Well, it's been a long time since I've worked on a hub. Never worked on sealed bearings. Want to convert my front Surly "old hub" to a hollow axle. I have teh hollow axle, its a 9 x 1 x 110 which matches thread with the old one. I have removed the cones but the axle seems pressed on. Is there a way to change the axle without taking it to the LBS? Or is there a special tool to get the axle off the bearings? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

why do you want to do that?
from what i know, yes there is a special tool to open the sealed bearings, but you could also probably tap them out gently.
there is another thread around here somewhere about this.

I don't know if ther's anything special about Surly hubs, but typically all you do is knock the axle through with a wooden or rubber mallet.

When the "New" Surly hubs were introduced, QBP touted the fact that the "New" model used a standard full-thread axle, so you could convert it. This was the principal improvement of the "New" model vis-a-vis the "Old" one.

If it's worth the trouble could he pound out the axle, taking the bearing with it (and ruining the bearing in the process)? He would have to obtain new bearings and a new hollow axle. Will that work?

Thanks for your kind reply. I wanted to follow up. I did take this to the Local Bike Shop and they confirmed what you said about the steps and shoulders (now that I know they're called this.) So I'll just have to figure out if my laziness about unbolting the front wheel to travel to my favorite trail is worth getting a new QR front wheel!
Thanks again,
