am i missing something?

i have an early 90's rock hopper that ive been riding as a single speed for a long while so i finally decided to buy some spacers and a cog and just remove my cassette. my problem is the lock ring isnt going anywhere. i have my lock ring remover and my chain whip and when ever i go to loosen the lock ring via the lock ring remover and a wrench it doesnt go anywhere (im going counter clockwise) no matter the force i put on it then it proceeds to fall out of the lock ring and onto the ground. its pretty annoying. are any secrets to removing the rear cassette that im missing? i looked it up on park tools and they suggested using the skewer to hold the lock ring remover in place but my skewer is too small for that. any other ideas?
thanks

Are you sure it is a cassette and not a freewheel? If it is a freewheel you do not need the chain whip.

Get a longer skewer or just take the wheel to your LBS and have them break it free for you.

A bigger wrench and a sharp or sudden force MIGHT break it loose.

uniglides do not have a seperate lockring, the small cog threads onto the freehub. you need two chainwhips to remove the cassette, and may have to retain the small cog as a lockring, unless the freehub is threaded for a more modern style lockring. see https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#uniglide for more details.
