6 Speed to 7 speed conversion

Hello,

I have a 1986 6-speed indexing downtube shift Cannondale road bike w/ Shimano 105 components. I would like to convert to Dual Control bar shifters. I am thinking that the solution is to add a 7 speed freewheel to my existing hub, then purchase either the Shimano Rsx or Sora 7 speed shifters. Am I correct thinking that the stay widths and clearances will be OK by simply installing a 7 cog freewheel in place of my old 6 speed?

Thanks,
Brian

It should be no problem, but it might be a good idea to check first. I just put a 7 speed casette on an 8 speed wheel, it needed a spacer but works ok. This wheel fits great on 1 of my bikes, but is a little too wide for another. Not sure why, both MTB's were 7 speeds...

A 7-speed FW is just slightly wider than a 6-speed FW. It will probably fit as is but there is a small chance that you will need to add a 1mm axle spacer to the drive side.

The front STI shifter will probably not pull enough cable for the "non-STI" front derailer.

Brian, the first thing you need to do is measure the distance between your rear dropouts. It should be either 126mm or 130mm. It's probably 126mm. After you do this you should consult this page:

https://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html

Sheldon discusses, in detail, all of the issues you need to consider to do your conversion. Good luck with your upgrade ;-)
