How does one differentiate the Campagnolo Record 10-speed cassettes from the lesser models? I was under the impression that ONLY the Record models had ANY actual titanium cogs. If I'm mistaken, then how does one id models?

Well, the three Campy upper end cassettes (two Record and one Chorus) are all basically the same. They fit on the same hub, and they are machined the same (the system is called Ultra Drive). The difference is that the Record hub comes in two versions and has either all or a few of the cogs made from Ti (depending on how much money you want to spend) while none of the Chorus cogs are Ti. The steel used in the non Ti cogs is the same in both Record and Chorus. The next "lower level" gruppo is Centaur and they use the Ultra Drive machining but different spacers and supports for the the larger cogs. You can read all about them here. However, without taking mine off the bike (I checked the instruction booklet and the website) I'm not sure how you tell the Ti from the steel except by appearance. They do not appear to be stamped "Record" or "Chorus."

I don't have much Campy experience but when I find a Shimano cassette around, first thing I look for is any kind of stamped or silk-screened code - then match it up with the chart. So far, every one of the couple or three dozen I've seen has some kind of identifying mark to work with. Sometimes I have to resort to counting teeth to differentiate between similarly marked parts.

A magnet will quickly tell you which, if any, cogs are Ti. Beyond that it can't tell Record steel from Mirage steel.

Silly suggestion - would a magnet stick to Titanium?

I thought it was obvious. No, a magnet won't stick to Ti but it will stick to steel so if a magnet sticks to any given cog it's steel, and if it doesn't, it isn't. Clear?

OK - I got the straight scoop: In 2005, Campy made two types of 10-speed Record cassettes: The "high end" Records had ALL titanium cogs. These were made only in 11-23, 12-25, and 13-26. Campy also made "low end" Record cassettes where the largest four cogs were titanium teeth and the lowest six cogs were steel. These "hybrid" Record cassettes came in 11-21, 11-23, 12-23, 12-25, 13-26, and 13-29 sizes.

For 2K6, Campy has changed the lineup, but I don't yet know how. I **do** know that they now make an all-titanium 13-29. Live and learn!!

I can only imagine what this thing will cost and how often it will have to be replaced. Ti is ok for large cogs since they aren't used that much and the wear is distributed over more teeth. I wonder how long a 15 or 17T Ti cog will last. Bring a big credit line if you buy one.

Thanks for the magnet tip. Only wish I'd thought of it myself -** Had changed around some wheels/cassettes last year for senior games time trials and wasn't sure which was on which. The training wheel cassette, that I thought was all steel, appeared to be ti to the eye ... but the magnet trick proved it and saved me removing/replacing two cassettes.
