Converting friction front DR to indexed
I have a 1970's Peugeot 10 speed that I'm using solely on the trainer. The Spinervals programs call for lots of shifting from large to small chainring. As this bike has a front friction shifter, sometimes it's a pain to go back and forth. I'm wondering if it's possible to install an indexed shifter on this bike front only. I doubt I'll use this outdoors again so I don't really care how/where it's mounted. The bike originally had down tube shifters that I replaced with stem ones for ease of use.

Front downtube and bar-end shifters aren't indexed even if the rear is.
If you mean front STI shifter, then yes, you can put one on. But you will need a new front derailer that is STI compatible.

I don't see any advantage to front indexing, I'd rather have them all friction, even STI.

I think I spend more time trying to make indexed front shifters work right than all other adjustments combined when setting up a bike.

If you only have 2 gears in front, a friction set up is already "indexed" - you just throw the shifter all the way to one side or the other. An indexed front shifter only makes sense if you want to stop in the middle of a three chainring setup.

What's missing here? Please explain the need for an indexing shifter when it only would have two positions? the same as a non-indexed. If the front gear system is a tripple chainring setup, it makes a bit more sense. One of my road bike is set up with Dura Ace indexed DT (SIS) shifters, but of course the front derailleur doesn't come with indexing ability.

You know what...you're right! I originally posted this as I was having problems with the chain dropping into position correctly and derailing and thought I could overcome this big PIA with a simple click. I've since adjusted the limit screws to reduce the travel and I think it's working better, although I may need to replace the DR itself as it has some issues (what do you expect after 35 years!)
