Steer Tube Removal

I have an old Mag 21 front fork that I would like to remove the steer tube which is a 1 1/8", and replace it with a 1" and put it on my commuter. Has anyone out there removed one and if so are they threaded in or was locktite used?

they were never threaded in but pressed into the aluminum crown from the factory. At one point they were pinch bolted in, but it would be obvious if that were the case. Bottom line is that you're screwed with your current setup.
Start searching Ebay for the correct crown/steerer combo you need, or just pony up a little more for a modern fork.

Lonnie, try this link and I think it might help. I think the steer tubes are actually swedged into the crown so I don't think they are removable. There are a number of crowns with the steer tube in them for sale on various sites.

If your steerer/crown is 1-1/8 x 7" or longer in length and has an aluminum steerer PM me because I will buy it from you and it will help to offset buying what you are looking for.

The squared off crowns like the one in the above listed auction have been recalled. That item would be ok for a collector, but unsafe to ride on.

Rock Shox steerers are pressed into the crown, and can be pressed out. RS does not reccomend this be done, probably for two reasons -- liability and they'd love to sell you a new assembly.

Keep watching ebay, and visit some local shops in your area. Some of them that have been around for a while may have the part you're looking for.

Thanks for the reply, The steer is a 1" and also steel . I saw the 1" steer on e-bay, however it would present another problem, and that is I would have to figure out how to remove the legs.
