What are those things on my wheels?

Hi , i recently brought a new pair of Mavic Elites and it comes with this tool. I figured out that it is used to turn a black thing on the hubs. So what are those black parts on the hubs and what are they for? Thanks.

hide that tool. it will be a loooooooong time from now before you'll ever need to use it. Futz with it now and you'll likely mess things up.

bearing adjustment. don't tinker unless something feels wrong. And then, don't tinker, bring it to your bike shop

Preference has nothing to do with it, its about whether your bearings are adjusted right or not, and seriously, like others have said, since it sounds like you don't know what you are doing, stash the tool and don't touch anything. You don't want to destroy your bearings.

I used it when i got mine, they were not turning very free. I adjusted each until they rotated free as they should. 7500 miles and i still check them and they are fine.
