Sturmey Archer Axle

I'm also putting this in the "Classic and Vintage" thread...

I tried to search the forums for this info, but didn't have much luck.

Does anyone know what the thread pitch of the older Sturmey Archer axle (AW specifically) is, and if it's an odd size, is a die available to fix the threads? Any info or links would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Its whitworth(less). I'm sure theres a die somewhere, but I would just get a nut, cut three slots in the threads with a dremel tool and use that as a makeshift die.

If the hub is still assembled, back out one of the cone nuts to initially clean up the threads, then use makeshift die.

Sturmey axles are way too easy to strip, and yes, they have their own threadpitch. I'm not sure if you can cut threads though, because of the slotted axle.

Clarify the "older" chronology. FWIW, I have an 80's AW I could check and measure if that is the era you are seeking.

If it's that badly stripped and you are rethreading, I wouldn't think it imperative you match the old threads.

1953 is the age of the hub...as well as the age of the bicycle
