help with SRAM cassette

I need to install my new SRAM 830 cassette on a shimano freehub, is the smooth, black, plastic insides of the cassette just for shipping and protection? I can't even see the splines to match up with the freehub. Help!! Newbie with a wrench in hand needs help.

Thanks in advance,
NFields

It should just push out towards the back of the cassette.

Thanks guys, I snapped the plastic insert out(after taking your advice) and determined it is in there to hold the 2 loose gears and lock ring. Thanks for your help, I will be riding tomorrow!!
