Second broken Shimano RD in a month

I can't even guess how this derailleur broke. I didn't even ride the bike. I just stripped it to weigh the frame and while reassembling I found that the derailleur cage is no longer sprung to take slack out of the chain. In fact it is sprung to loosen the chain. Grrrrr. I doubt I will ever buy another Shimano component other than to replace a broken one - pretty common occurrence these days. I have no idea who I bought the derailleur from. I bought it on ebay. It was new in the box. I bought it 6 months ago. It might have a total of 1500 miles on it. Is there any way to get warranty relief from Shimano?

You sure you threaded the chain through the right way?

Are you sure you installed it with the b-screw behind the tab on the dropout?

If you've broken two Shimano rear derailleurs in a month, I have to assume it's something you are doing. I've ridden Shimano derailleurs for over 30,000 miles each and have worked on dozens of them on various bikes. I've never seen a "broken" one that wasn't crashed.

Thanks. Yes I know how to intall a derailleur. I took the thing apart. The spring had slipped off the stud that holds it. Last month's deraillure simply snapped into two pieces. The solution is clear. Campagnolo!

I'm sure that you can tear up a Campy part just as well as you have the Shimano branded ones.

This threads sounds like that other one about both Shimano brifters failing at the same time, were purchased mail order and warranty was in question. Hmmm.

I suggest buying your Campy stuff from an authorized dealer so you get a warranty.

Good luck...................only way you get a warranty is probably through your LBS with receipt.

Why are you disassembling the derailleur? There's a little pin on the cage that stops it from unwinding completely all the way around. DO NOT take that pin off. Also why are you removing the circlip that keeps the bolt and spring all together? The only thing you need to do is unscrew the big pivot bolt and the RD comes off the frame. Break the chain, unclamp the cable and off it goes.

I'm fairly certain the OP is an anti-Shimano, pro-Campy TROLL. Which is incredibly sad when you think about it. Check out all his threads.
