Cable housing braze-on thingies needed

I am upgrading a nice lightweight Tange steel frame to 9 speed, but am stuck at not having braze-ons for the shifter cable guides. The original shifters were on the down tube, plain friction ones. What are my options?

(I asked at the LBS and he scared me right out of the door with his specially machined aluminium ones at over $100!!!!!!!! [moderator removed] off, will you?!)

If you have downtube shifter bosses brazed on to the frame, you can install cable guides on those.

I converted a Schwinn Paramount from downtube shifters to ergos. There is a fitting from both Campy and Shimano that will work for minimal cost. It is a cable stop for front and rear Derailluers.

If you have brazed-on down-tube shifter bosses, Here's what you need:
[img=https://www.loosescrews.com/Product_Images/LS-9601SF.jpg[/img]
I've linked you to Loose Screws through this picture, but lots of places sell these. Your bike shop should have lots sitting around, because STI levers and Bar-End shifters come with an extra set of these in case they're to be installed on frames with down-tube bosses.
What did your bike shop try to charge you $100 for?

I don't have shifter bosses, the shifters were a clamp-on arrangement, with a thin band-like brazed-on stop around the down tube to anchor them.

Then you need a clamp-on downtube cable stop: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/cables.html#hardware

I can't buy from them - a multitude before me wrecked it for overseas buyers.

You can buy clip on metal rings that have a space for guides on them. I'm sorry I can't remember what they are called right now, but go to any decent bike shop and ask them. You can put them where ever you like on your bike to guide the cables. (You will also want the inserts.)

With a location of "37°48'S 145°22'E" you are realy 'overseas'. Delivery will be a problem ,however, Wilson and FedEx may be able to make the delivery.

They're not a terribly uncommon part... find an LBS that deals in older bikes and show them a picture. Or you might have better odds looking for a used or NOS Suntour clamp that was made exactly for this purpose. eBay has them, for instance: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=36140 -- or, for example, I was able to pick one up at a bike swap for $3.

It's not the delivery - I regularly get stuff from the States using USPS - but the minimum order: $100. They implemented this policy after hassles with overseas buyers. I have bought small stuff from LooseScrews with no problem.

Thanks for all the replies - I now see what is available and I can get these off ebay. I could also easily make one from stainless steel sheeting.

The cable stops that timcupery suggested should bolt righ on to the studs on the downtube shifters. Remove the old shifters and the cablestops bolt right up. That's how I converted my old Miyata to STI. Most bike shops should carry the Shimano cable stops.

His frame doesn't have braze-on downtube shifter bosses and the bosses on clamp-on downtube shifters aren't a standard size or configuration. The usual Shimano or Campy cable stops won't work.

I also have an older Tange frame that has shifter bosses on the downtube. I got the adapters but they don't seem to fit. The ones the lbs gave me, and the ones that I have on my other bike are meant for a square mount. That is, a square section against the frame, with the post protuding from that.

What I have is a round mount with a "key" built into it. The post then protudes from that.

Its hard to tell if other adapters are meant to fit these shifter bosses, or just the square boss type.

Anyone with info, please let me know. I looked at the mount that Harris Cyclery sells, but I would then have to put adjusters, or at least one adjuster on. I'd also rather try and keep it as clean as possible.

I didn't say that he had braze-on bosses. I've done this on my bike. I had clamp-on bosses on my bike. You remove the shift levers from the from the clamp and put the cable stop in their place. The Shimano cable stops will fit Shimano clamp-on bosses. They might even fit on the old Suntour. The bosses are usually the same size and diameter as braze-on bosses (Hint: They all use the same lever ). If you don't have the proper clamp-on bosses, the Shimano ones are readily available.

If you need cable stops, but don't have downtube shifter braze points, you can use this clamp on jobbie:

You can make an unsightly but effective cable stop out of your clamp-on shifter boss: just remove the levers and associated parts and drill out the upper hole to accecpt the diameter of the cable housing that runs to the bifter/barcon. I did this years ago when I went from low-end Simplex downtube sfifters to Sun Tour barcons. The 'cable stop' still has the little Simplex trademark stamped on it.
