I was screwing around with my rear der shifter and unscrewed a screw I was not supposed to, the little phillips head at the top face of the lever. Behind a small oval/flat piece a spring popped out was under tension and no doubt makes the lever pop back in place when shifting to a bigger cog. Well, try as I might, I can't seem to get it seated so that the lever returns. The release lever works fine. Advice? Hopefully, I have not trashed my beautiful DA STI!
ps--here is a pic of the spring. I found this URL on repair but it sounds like the mechanic fashioned his own tools for re-inserting the spring. Argh.

Maybe an LBS in town can put it back together for you. I'd be reluctant to mess with it further as you might make things worse or even lose the spring. It's amazing how far a little spring will travel when it gets away from you.

an hour later and about 20 attempts, I was able to reseat it. What helped was reading that the spring, when properly seated, actually holds the faceplate in place. It gets wound up tight enough to fit inside the smaller circle on the faceplate. Never again will I mess with that screw! Although it was interesting to read up on how mechanical people adjust the tension on their STI by drilling new holes for the spring. Might keep that in mind. Another good idea on re-installation of the spring is to super glue one end into one of the holes. Fortunately, I didn't get that desperate. Plus there were two holes to choose from on the main body of the der. I chose the smaller one at about 4:00 position.

I am in a similar situation. Out of my own supidity took apart my right (rear) Tiagra shifter. Was able to assemble it back, but this big lever spring is a boomer - can not load it properly. Any suggestions what can be done? Any tools ?
Thanks anyone!
