Been riding outside all winter...
and now my bottom bracket is squeaking whenever I get out of the saddle and push a little.
What's an easy (if there's such a thing) fix for this? Also, what other stuff should be done and how often riding in a wet Chicago winter?? I clean the entire drive train about every two weeks and lube the chain weekly when the entire bike gets a good wipedown. As a side note... when should chainrings and cogs be replaced? And... do cranks and shifters ever HAVE to be replaced or is it an upgrade-itis luxury sort of thing? Thanks!!! |
is it a sealed bottom bracket? if so, it may be time to toss it and get a new one. if it has bearings, just take the bb out and repack it with lube. its rainy here in santa cruz as well, just make sure you wipe all that water off your bike after you ride. it prevents rust and makes sure that water wont seep in to parts of your bike.
your chainrings and cogs should not need regularly replacing, however if you can stick a penny in between two chainring teeth, its time to replace em. no cranks and shifters never have to be replaced. you upgrade them as you feel you need them |
Grease BB, grease cranks, grease pedals. Re-install and torque to proper specs.

Most BB units are non-maintainable cartridges; when they wear out you replace the whole unit. You need the correct BB shell width, axle width and crank fitting.
High-end BB units from some manufacturers have replaceable industrial cartirdge bearings and are fully serviceable. Traditional lose-ball bearing BB units are very rare in modern bikes but are fully maintainable. Make sure that your frame is OK on the inside, inspect the seat-tube for rust. I wax my bike to prevent drust. |
Just make sure it's really the bottom bracket. It could also be the pedals or the stem or the handlebars. Creaking stems were very common on the old treaded headsets.
