A qualified yes. There is probably someone else making a road brake lever compatible caliper. There are V-brake compatible road levers, not STI, that would let you use other calipers And there is a rear brake for tandems that is cable/hydraulic. But the Avids work so well, there is no need to look for another

There is one (maybe more?) model of drop-bar levers made to pull the same amount of cable as regular MTB levers, meaning they'll work with any brake designed for regular MTB levers.
You can buy them from harris cyclery (linked above, may not be the lowest price) or someone else.
At least one person claimed that road levers work well with MTB cable-actuated disc brakes even though the brakes are apparently meant to be used with MTB levers.

yeah, i'm familiar with the 287-V's. problem is, i want to use brifters. and Avid Road Discs are freaking expensive! i didn't pay that much for my Hayes Hydros...
