What could cause drag on a 6 speed?

My Univega has alot of drag on the drivetrain and I'm pretty sure it's not the BB in the front - I took off the chain and the crankset spins pretty good.

What would need to be replaced in the rear assembly to get it to spin better? Thanks

The bottom bracket, rear hub, and derailleur pulleys are the only bearings that could cause drag in a drivetrain. I'd check your derailleur pulleys first because they're the easiest. But if you haven't serviced the hub in a while, it's probably due.

Depending on what you mean by dragging.

If the bike coasts pretty well, and the issue is resistance against pedaling, then the hub bearings probably aren't dragging. This could be the pulleys or the chain.

If by dragging you mean that it doesn't coast too well, then the problem is most likely one of the hubs (front or rear), or something else rubbing tyhe tires or wheels to inhibit the wheels from spinning freely.

Although, even if it coasts well, I would agree that if the hubs haven't been serviced in a while, it can't hurt to take this opportunity to clean and lubricate them.

assuming you're running a 6 speed freewheel, you can drip a bit of lube into it where the cogs spin around the splines. if it's still not smooth, take the freewheel off and lube it from the backside.

This is true if "dragging" is defined as the pedals being pressured to pedal when the rider is trying to coast. When a bicycle is being pedaled, the bearings in a freewheel are not moving at all.
