New Bike, Any preride maintenance?
I just purchased a new bike ('05 trek pilot 5.0). A completely unplanned purchase. Went to the store to look at shoes and came out with a new bike and shoes. True to form, as soon as I purchased the thing, Winter showed up and I haven't had a chance to ride it yet. Tomorrow is the day. While admiring it on the stand I noticed that the chain was clean, but sticky. My question is should I clean it with a solvent and lube it prior to riding? They didn't mention this at the shop, so I'm not sure this is required. What do you think...

Just wipe off the excess grease on the chain. You may want to make sure all the fasteners are tight, tires are aired up, Q.R.s are tight, etc. But if it's a good shop, everything should be up to snuff. Pray for good weather and go ride your new baby...
Congratulations, OHB

Unless it's like peanut butter sticky, I'd leave the chain alone.
Make sure the wheels are properly trued, properly centered in the fork/stays, and make sure the quick-releases are properly tightened. Pump up the tires. Check the tightness of the brake-cable nuts, and the action of the brakes. Make sure you've got a way to fix a flat. Then ride.
