    Threadless 1 1/8th bearing removal question

    My bike was assembled poorly and I'm R&R'ing my headset.
    The lower bearing isn't inserted fully into the frame bearing cup. As a result the fork isn't sitting as deeply into the frame as it should.
    I have fried to sink the the bearing deeper but it's stuck. Trying to remove it has resutled in the bearing coming apart, leaving the outer race in the frame. I can see that it isn't seated as deeply as it should be...probably 3/16ths short of seated. But I can't budge it. There is no lip on the inside for me to get a punch or any other kind of tool on it.

    Any ideas? Not sure I want to drive the cup out of the frame although I do have a new one to push back in if I need to.

    I already know I need new bearings as the old one fell apart during my efforts. I was wondering about grinding some of the cup lip away so I could get to the back of the race.

    Ideas?

    Are you sure the original bearing wasn't installed upside down?

    Aww come on you mechanics out there!!! LOL I am stuck here!

    No the bearing is definately in the right way up...it's just not in the right way, otherwise I'd be able to pop it out with finger pressure like I can on my other bikes.

    I gave you the only idea I could given the very limited information you provided i.e., was the bearing installed in the correct orientation? You didn't answer that question so there was no point offering anything more.

    The next recommendation is to take it to a good bike shop and let someone who knows what they are doing see it first hand.

    ..Or post a photo of the offending bearing cup as it sits now in the absence of more info. Can't imagine why it wont come out by hand unless its really fubar'd. Help us help you. If the lower retainer is mangled that badly you may need more than just a bearing.

    You might have better luck getting a response if you disclose the brand/model of the headset and/or the bike.

    Is it possible to dremmel it? If you can cut it into pieces carefully without cutting into the frame - it may fall out or be easier to get out. Without a pic - I'm just throwing out ideas - I'm always amazed at what a dremmel can do!

    Go to your LBS. They have the proper tool so you won't butcher the part. They may see something that is clearly wrong with the headset inserts. Don't waste a lot of your time and energy. May cost you $25 to $35 at most.

    OK...I thought I had painted a good picture with words but I guess not.

    The bottom bearing race ISN"T seated all the way into the cup which is press fitted into an Aluminium Frame. The bearings are from an AHEADSET by Cane Creek. The bearing has a tapered shoulder whic fits into a tapered recess in the cup, so I know it was put in the right way...it's just that it didn't go in all the way and it is really stuck in place. I can't drive it in and because of the taper, I can't come at it from the top and drive it out either. The local LBS looked it at and said he would try a bigger hammer than what I used.
    If someone is going to screw up the frame, it might as well be me. At least I think I will be more careful. I'm actually looking for machinist advice, not LBS advice at this point.

    I might have to resort to a dremel if I can't find a punch with a bend in the bottom of it.
