front deraillier trouble

have just put new shifters on my bike, which has involved a bit of adjustment of the front derailler. now i can't get into my largest chain ring. The shifters ive just put on are newish deore lx and the front derailler is deore, could it be because the newer shifters don't work very well with the older derailler?
also when you shift the front derailler it moves forward and back as well as side to side and i don't know if this is normal. maybe i just need a new one.

sounds like its not clamped down tight enough. make sure the cage of the derailleur is 1-3 mm above the largest chainring (you should be able to fit a penny in there). also make sure it is parallel to the largest chainring and clamp it down tight.

it also sounds like you have a problem with chain tension. loosen the cable clamp on the derailleur and then loosen the barrel adjuster on the shifter. then pull the cable as tight as you can and tighten the cable clamp. then you can tighten the cable with the barrel adjuster.

also check your limit screws

Here is the FD alignment proceedure from the folks at Park Tool:

https://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=75

Take your time and follow this step-by-step. Do not skip over steps or re-arrange the order. This method is tried and true. If you take the time to learn it correctly, FD alignment problems will be in your past. Good luck!

How old is the bike?

If it preceeds index front shifting, you will probably have to upgrade your front derailleur. If you had index front shifting before, it'll work. Goto the Park website that another poster mentioned and start at the very beginning just as if youwere installing the front derailleur for the first time. The sequence of the various adjustments is important so be sure to do it all in order.

cheers for that, it did have index front shifting before so sounds like it should be okay, i was trying to follow Park tool instructions the first time round, but i guess its just a case of persisting...
