    b-tension screw has no effect?

I just installed a new 105 9sp rear derailleur for use with with my 11-21 cassette. It works and shifts fine, but the b-tension screw appears to have zero effect on the derailleur. After a close inspection, it looks like the metal part that the screw pushes around just is not close enough to the tab it would have to push to bring the derailleur closer up to the cassette. I don't think I really need to move the derailleur closer anyway, but it is puzzling to me. Is this a result of my small cassette? Has anyone had a similar issue? Thanks.

The b-tension setting should have the pulleys elevated off the cassette enough to allow smooth shifting but close enough for responsiveness. If you have a very tight chain it can minimize the ammount it will travel before encountering spring tension. It is also a possibility that the screw end may not be resting on the tab of the hanger, though that is relatively rare with new parts. How to fix that is very dependent on the types of parts, but the screw should be pushing on the tab of the hanger or a secondary tab between for same effect.

Thanks for the quick reply. The screw is definitely properly engaging the tab on the hanger. I looked at it again and just cannot figure out why it's not moving the derailleur. I'll try to post a picture for clarification later.

If it ain't broke ("it works and shifts fine"), don't fix it.
