I just went through a very painful crankset install. I don't know if anyone has used Azonic 454s before, but proper setup involves a maddening trial and error process of dispersing lots of tiny black spacers around the bottom bracket cups and crank arms.
So, with a significant amount of help from a fellow MTBer, I've got the cranks almost perfectly set up--no lateral play, and they spin freely. Except for one thing: the drive side bottom bracket cup has, just barely, one thread showing out of the frame's BB shell--maybe 1mm out, if that.
Will it ruin my bottom bracket if I ride it like this?
Alright. I know those cranks all too well. You shouldnt run them like that at all, you risk stripping the cup should a bearing **** up. You also need to make sure you have as much spindle inside the crank arm as possible before you run into the frame. It helps prevent the pinch bolt working loose.
If you know for a fact you have your Arms centered (equally measure against the downtube), loosen the pinch bolt on the drive side, undo the fixing bolt in increments and witha mallet tap the spindle(attached to the left arm) out of the BB. You need it out to do this.
Once you have the arms/spindle removed loosen the no drive side cup 3 - 4 turns. Tighten the driveside cup properly, then use the left hand cup to preload the bearings.
Re-assemble the cranks, Use Anti seize on the spindle. Its somthing you will regrett not doing after a few rainy rides. Use blue loctite on both pinch bolts and crank bolts.
