Anyone know if suntour superbe pro road cranks take a shimano or campy taper BB spindle?

AFAIK, Sun Tour always used the JIS crank taper which is the same as Shimano and nearly every one else except Campy.

Not so. Original Superbe cranks use ISO crank taper.

To the best of my knowledge, Superbe Pro also uses ISO taper... a while back I was running a Superbe Pro track BB with an old Superbe crank and the fit was perfect. The same crank fit poorly on a JIS Shimano BB.

Track cranks are a world of their own so I wouldn't generalize from that experience. Are you sure the Superbe road cranks used an ISO taper?

Yep, the Superbe cranks that I have are road double cranks. They'll only work on either a Superbe BB or an ISO BB... I've used both Campy and Miche BB's successfully.

I have Suntour superbe Pro track cranks and the road double both mated to Miche BB's. I did just find, Finally!, a Superbe Pro Track BB to match my Cranks ... over $100 from Euro-Asia.

Careful with those. If it's the same Superbe Pro Track BB I had - cartridge bearings, adjustable chainline - you may not want to ride it on the street very much. I got a year out of my first (NOS when purchased) before the bearings went ka-put. It's *really* hard to find replacement cartridge bearings (they're an odd size) and when you do, they're expensive (I think well over $50/pr.) My LBS randomly had another NOS Superbe Pro Track BB laying around that they let me borrow, and that one died in six months.

If they are ISO tapers, then any current Campy bb should work. Just find an appropriate spindle length.

I thought they were campy taper, but I wanted to be sure. My LBS has a low end campy BB with a 102 mm spindle that should work, if my maths are right.

According to Sheldon Brown (whose page was edited and subsequently misunderstood by me), a 111 mm campy spindle will put the outer chainring at 46 mm. To get a proper 42 mm track chainline, I need a spindle that is 8 mm shorter, or 103 mm long. The campy one is close enough.

I was considering the Miche BB, but I think they only come in Italian threading, so no go. Also, I've read that they suck, though I suspect they're just being installed incorrectly.

Whoa there, tiger...

Not sure what frame you're using, but my Superbe cranks would never work with a 102mm Campy taper on my '05 Steamroller... they just wouldn't clear the chainstays. A 107mm Miche BB gets me as close as comfortable (within 2-3mm), and even then the BB doesn't sit squarely in the frame (Miche BB's have adjustable chainline). Just my experience... maybe a Superbe Pro would yield different results.

Also, I'm not sure what 'low-end Campy' BB your LBS showed you that was 102mm. AFAIK, only Chorus and Record bottom brackets measure 102mm, the rest only go as low as 111mm.

Furthermore, Miche track BB's do indeed come in English threading. Google Red Rose Imports... they can sell you one.

I find it funny how people continuously regurgitate the same information over and over again. Here I thought it was something that was reserved for the s/s f/g forum; where no one reads and everyone has to put in their 2 cents ... I was wrong. Clearly this is rampant across bf in general. Saddening. I wish people would read. Good luck with the BB. Simple problems = Simple answers.
