question about forks (road, 1")

question about forks (road, 1")
so my question concerns a road fork, 1", threaded, but i guess applies to all forks... can you take a threaded fork that is extra long for your frame, and cut it down past the threads and run it threadless? the exterior diameter should be the same i assume, but the interior needs to be the same as well to hold a star nut. would it hold up?

I put an extra long threaded carbon fork in my 1998 Litespeed Ultimate with a threadless headset & stem. I applied some tape to the threads under the stem and it works just fine. In my case my frame had a fairly short head tube and that made a big difference. Good Luck

So long as you aren't going to clamp your stem on the threads you're good to go.

that's all but a hypothetical question because the threaded steerer tube would have to be super long to work. The "book" answer is not to do it because the bottom thread will become a stress riser and the fork could snap in two at that point.

I've done it with a 56cm road bike. I found a fork at my LBS that was VERY long. But to answer the OP's question....Yup.
