adjusting the gear indicators on shifter?

This is a brand new 06 Specialized Epic, seems to have 04 m-570 mega 9 shifters. My search didn't turn up anything and a trip to the exploded view at shimano's website didn't provide much info! Was riding yesterday and noticed the gear indicator for the rear DR was in need of adjusting. when in first gear the indicator appears to point to about the third gear position. when in high gear, the indicator is buried almost out of sight. I loosened the cable to make sure it wasn't the cable tension or the shifter itself. Is there an adjustment for this? If so can I do it myself or take it to my local shop?

Try shifting the bike completely through the rear derailleur range from the smallest to the largest cog. I believe that recenters the indicator.

I had XT's that the rear indicator was off. I'm very mechanical so I took them apart and tried to find a fix. There is no means for adjustment and the whole thing seems to have a lot of play for something that should be accurate to be of any use. I very carefully bent the indicator arm so it was in the proper position. Very carefully being the key here, the arm is very small and delicate. It was better but still not really accurate. I finally quit paying any attention to the indicators and eventually took them off.

Went completely though the range a couple times this morning while I had the bike on the stand, " Had to index the shifting once i hooked the cable back up, when satisfied i ran through the gears a couple times just to make sure the indexing was fine. it didn't have any affect on the shift indicator

Sorry, I was just repeating what I read here a few day ago. My "gear indicator" is to look down at the cassette.

If you're referring to this thread, the mechanism is completely different.
