Presta Valve Stems - How Long?

The wheels for the new road bike I'm putting together take tubes with Presta valves, which are new for me. The valve stems come in various lengths, how much of the stem length needs to protrude out past the nut to allow a pump to function?
Also, do they make a Presta inflation fitting that can be attached to an air hose? I like to pump up the Schraders on my old Frankenbike using my garage compressor, and would like to be able to do the same with the new wheels. TIA for the help....

Approximately 3/4". One inch would be fine.
There are schrader/presta adaptors available to allow use of a compressor, but a bicycle floor pump with a built-in gauge is much better.

Yes, any good bike shop should have screw-on Presta-to-Schrader adaptors, but I agree with Al that a floor pump is the way to go. Mine was only $20 at Nashbar.
There is no harm in using long valve stems, but they are designed for deep aerodynamic rims.
