New Shimano RD - Why All The Lube?

Another question, and I'm sure there will be many more as I put together this new bike. Bought a new Shimano 105 long cage RD, which has an oily film over every part and some big gobs of fluorescent grease back in the parallelogram spring and pivots. I know there is a need to keep moving parts lubed, but this seems more than a bit too much. I would think it will attract a bunch of crud and be counterproductive to proper lubing. Should I clean this stuff up or leave it alone? What's the best for cleaning off the oily film from the outer surfaces, it looks slimy. As always, TIA for the help....

Just wipe off the excess with a rag.

A rubber glove and a rag soaked in mineral spirits are one of bike mechanic's best friends.

The grease you see is what squirted out when the lubed it at the factory, they want to make sure the interior pivot areas are full greased because it is te last time most of them will ever see it(No grease ports)

Thanks for the inputs. I think the Rev has it right that most folks won't even think that stuff like that needs to be lubed during it's life. However, it's the regular cleaning and lubing that has kept the ol' Frankenbike happily rolling along since I bought it in the late '70's. So, I'll clean off the interior excess with Q-Tips, and wipe the external slime of the visible cosmetics with a mild degreaser and a rag. Gotta take pride in yer ride....
