New Season Squeaks...

Well, last night was the first decent night I've had since last fall to go get some quality road-miles in on my Jamis. I have been training thru the winter on a couple fixed gears, and have gotten very used to the extremely quiet ride. I oiled the chain and squirted PB Blaster on the deraileurs last night before I started. Quickly into the ride, I notice squeaking coming from the rear cassette only when I pedal, and only on the middle gears. The upper and lower extremes seem to spin quietly. But the middle ones it is very noticable on. What might I have going on here, and what do I need to lube to get the damn thing almost as quiet as fixie?

Thanks in advance, and good to be back...

Worn cassette? The middle gears are obviously more prone to wear, but I'm not sure they'd cause a squeak.

Have you eliminated the chain completely from your inquiries? It's always my first port of call for a random squeak. The reason you might not notice the squeak on the extreme gears is due to the difference in pressure through the chain - unless you have the perfect consistent-cadence technique.

Good luck with it though, there's nothing worse than a rattle or squeak on a bike. Be grateful it's not your knee - happened to me this winter!

Thanks for the leads Matt...I'll give it a closer inspection over the weekend. I'm thinking it's the chain too at this point now. And sorry to hear about your knee! What kind of squeak did it develop? And not so easy to lube one of them up, is it?

About ten miles from home, going quite nicely, started to here a little click with every rotation of my right pedal. Stopped to check it out. Couldn't see anything. Got back on and happened to put my hand on my knee...

About a mile later, major pain developed and I couldn't walk for a few days. Since, I have played rugby and cycled lots with no recurrence. Weird, though.

Hope that drivetrain behaves for you. Let me know what you find.

I'll be sure and post back...I'm sure sensitive to any noise now after riding the fixed gears all winter. And my hat is off to you for playing Rugby...closest thing we have to it is bull-riding over here I think, and I am inclined to believe Rugby is rougher! Pray for warm weather this weekend...
