What kind of grease?

What kind of grease do you use for bearings and other parts? I'm currently using white lithium grease.

I currently use the Polylube stuff from Parktool. Probably overpriced compared to other more generic stuff, but I don't use enough of it to really care.

Marine bearing grease. Available anywhere, and if it will take the abuse going in and out of water on a boat trailer, it will work fine for bikes. If I remember correctly, think I read somewhere that lithium grease was not recommended for use on forks-someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I buy my grease in the tube because it can't get contaminated the way grease in a tub can. Dust falls in that tub of grease every time you open the lid and that can't be good for your bearings. A tube lasts me about two years, so cost isn't an issue. I use Park Polylube because that's what my LBS sells.

I predict this thread will reach 30 postings in the next two days. They always do. Ignore the Crisco and similar recommendations.

Absolutely ANY commercial grease is overkill for a bicycle because of the bike's low load, low speed, low temp, low pressure.

Having said that I agree with Dirtdrop that a tube is very convenient. I use CV joint grease in a tube, cheap, available at auto discount parts stores.

+2 on the Lubrimatic from Home Depot. Put it into film canisters to keep contamination down.

I like my Pedro's SynGrease. I am sure that it is obscenely expensive on a per ounce basis, but in the quanitities that I use it, who cares? I spend more in a year on shaving cream!

Pretty much any decent automotive grease will suffice, schloads cheaper than bike specific. Just stay away from the Kentucky Jelly.....

Currently using Phil Wood. I spend lots of money on bikes and parts I don't need. It'd be silly of me to pretend to be frugal and buy a vat o' marine grease.

for loose ball, cup-n-cone style bearings, i use the finish line grease with teflon. it's thick, and smooth, and lasts a long time. polylube and phil's tend to break down pretty quickly, and phil's smells atrocious. for cartridge bearings, just peel the seal, drip in a thick liquid grease (like phil's tenacious oil, or dumonde tech's liquid grease -it comes in a white bottle with a blue lid), replace the seal and reinstall the bearing.

for threads and such, polylube works very well, it's fine for bearings, but i've had much better results with the finish line stuff. the tri-flow teflon grease is essentially the same stuff, and works just as well.

phil's works okay, better than poly lube, but the smell alone is enough to make me steer clear of it. i worked at a shop that ONLY used phil's for everything, and the smell got stuck in my nostrils from working with it constantly, and drives me batty. i love the smell of triflow, however.

for suspension anything, dumonde tech MR grease, or Liquid O-ring's PM600 military spec grease. both of those are best for suspension because they both dissolve in shock oil and won't clog up the ports. the PM600 is a little better at it, but dumonde tech is pretty damn nice, and it looks like caramel.

Arctic grease

Arctic grease or extreem low temp grease for its low viscosity and corosion protection. Marine grease for BB as second alternative.

The site has been erratic for days. They did a server change a week or so ago and it's been unreliable ever since.
