    Friction shifting stuck in last to high gears?

    So I purchased this nice ross road bike for my sister. I know how to do simple things, cables, bar tape etc...However, shifting is different. The shifting on this is a 6 speed with downtube friction shifters. The right shifter is currently flat with the downtube, but is in the second to lowest rear gear. I pull up and it will go to the lowest, set it back even to the downtube and it pops back one. So my question is this.
    How do I get the shifting back on track, I need to get the gears all the way up to the highest rear gears, but run out of shifting when the shifter lays down and reaches only to the second lowest. Can someone give me some insight on how to readjust the shifters range? Hope this makes some sense! Thanks

    Sounds like everything is gunked up.
    1. Check the screw tension on the shifter (there should be a flat head screw) loosen it a little... this might fix your problem. If not,
    2. Remove the rear derailleur and clean it well... then let it dry, lube it and put it back on. If that doesn't work then:
    3. Replace the cable... it might be rusted stiff.

    actually, everything is really clean and lubed. The problem is that the adjustments are offf, somehow I need to reset the shifting itself. When I attempt to put the chain up into higher gears, I run out of shifting, the cable is loose on the downtube. What would be the way to loosen the shifter/cable - to get the full range of shifting back in line.

    I think what you want to do is unfasten the shift cable at the rear derailleur. Once you have done this, the derailleur should automatically align itself over the smallest rear cog. At this point, adjust the shifter so that the cable has the maximum slack (I think this would be with the shifter all the way forward). While things are disconnected, make sure the derailleur has the necessary range of travel (you can move it by hand to check). If it doesn't have the necessary travel, make sure the limit screws are not set really wierd, and also try cleaning it. Also check to make sure the shift cable moves smoothly.

    When you reconnect the cable, you want the shift cable as loose as it gets, the rear derailleur on the smallest cog, and a minimum of slack in the cable.
