removing cassette from just hub, no wheel

i picked up a dumpster bike a couple of months ago that had the rear mech rip apart the rear wheel. I guess no one wanted to fix it or they didn't know how. anyway it has a nice 7 speed hyperglide cassette i want for another set of slick commuting wheels. I decided to use it for parts so I cut the hub from the spokes then realized i wouldn't be able to grip the wheel when removing the cassette.

my question is how do i remove the cassette from the hub wihout damaging it? i also have a lifu HG cassette tool with the guide pin, and the hub has a solid axle. do i have to remove the axle to continue? i've also never removed a cassette and this will be my first time.

Axle out, bench vise with wooden jaws. If you're lucky, the cassette won't be too securely fastened. Good luck.

Edit: Whoops. Cassette. Not freewheel. My bad.

This is a perfect example of why an axle vise and a chain whip are good investments. If you have an axle vise, you just clamp the hub and then use a chain whip and the cassette removal tool. A decent axle vise can be had for less than $15.

Hold on here, the lockring threads into the freehub body, which is the same chunk of metal the cassette splines are on. Either I'm sitting under the stupid tree, or you should only need a chain whip and the removal tool.

Landgolier is right if it's a cassette all you need is a chainwhip and the cassette lock ring removal tool. If it's a freewheel then we need to be pulling out the vise.

Just lay the hub on the floor with the cassette facing out-wards, chainwhip in left hand and lock ring tool in right, and press down to the floor

Good to hear. I tell people I'm a shade tree bike mechanic, I just never admit which tree it is.
