Removing dust seals

from a rear axle has always been a problem for me. The inverted one on the drive side will sometimes come out intact but the non-drive side seal (the convex one) usually gets deformed if I try to remove it. I tried inventing a little puller but had no luck. I tried a small, split ring bearing puller but it slips. I tried the round end of a 13mm cone wrench but same problem. Does anyone have a solution. I know I could just leave them in and work around them but I am a bit compulsive when it comes to cleaning.

Get a long bolt that has a head that just fits into the hole of the dust seal. Attach a vise grip to the other end, put the head of the bolt into the hole, move it so the head grabs the inside of the dust seal then take a hammer and tap on the vise grip to extract the seal.

I use a wide bladed screwdriver and work it around the inside lip a little at a time. The seals usually come out with no distortion. A small hammer and a flat surface straightens the ones that don't.
