Fork question

I have a bike with a bent fork, and I just found a replacement fork, only the steerer tube is a little longer than mine because the frameset I'm getting the fork from is a larger frame. So....

Can I cut and rethread the steerer tube down to the size I need, or is there some reason that can't be done?
