carbon crown race?
So I got a decent deal on a frame, and a great deal on a full-carbon Time fork. Went to fiddle with them today, just to see how things would fit together, and was surprised to find that not only was there no groove for a crown race in this used fork, but there actually seems to be a "built-in" carbon crown race. Is this correct, or am I missing something?

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

Is this from an "integrated headset" frame? Maybe the race is intended for a dedicated headset. It would absolutely have to be a cartridge bearing unit because there is no way loose (or caged) balls could be allowed to run on a carbon surface.
I'd contact the fork's seller to find out what frame it came from and contact Time to see what headset the fork is compatible with.

The fork came from a Cannondale (2002 I think, looking at the old website), and is "si" which I believe means integrated. The frame I got requires a Cane Creek IS integrated headset, which I bought.
Looks like the Cannondales had a campy hiddenset. Don't know if the Cane Creek is an exact sub for that or not, or if my frame would accept the Campy.

That looks right to me. The lower bearing sits right on the fork. Pretty slick system.
Make sure your headset is tight before every ride. Riding loose headsets is never a good idea, but it could be especially damaging on this bike, since any movement between the bearing and the fork could cause damage.

Campagnolo and Cane Creek integrated headsets are not interchangable. The bearing angles and configuration are different. I don't know if the "crown race" you have will work with the Cane Creek headset but the rest of the two headsets will not. Can you get the real crown race for a Cane Creek headset and fit it to your fork?

I do have the Cane Creek race - that's it in the picture. But I'd have to cut off the "built in" race. And I wonder if that would damage the fork.

Well, Fetish Cycles was nice enough to go back and forth on a couple emails with me, and was a partial help - I learned that only the Cane Creek headset will work with the frame. But they still didn't satisfactorily answer my question about whether the carbon race replaces the aluminum one. Maybe Cane Creek will get back to me too...
I doubt Cannondale will bother to help me, and all of the Time websites are in French.
