Will 9 speed cassettes fit on 8 speed freehubs?

The thread title pretty much says it all. I'm swapping my crank and shifters soon. So I'm wondering if an 9 speed cassette and chain would get me to a 9 speed drive train, or if the freehub will be a problem. It's a Shimano STX RC hub circa '97 if that makes a difference

If I recall correctly, STX RC was 8 speed, so the 9 sp cassette should fit that hub.
