shifting problem!!

Alright my bike is a gary fisher aquila 21 speed with shimano shifters. out of the 21 gears i only have like 6. it wont let me shift down to first or third on the left hand shifter. On the right shifter i can go from 1 to 5 with no problem. 6 and 7 i can get in there but it makes a weird noise when im in those gears. The guy at the bike store said it needs to be adjusted. are they any diy or anything on how to do this? i am very new thanks for the help!

check out https://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html GREAT article. I knew very little about derailer adjustments before I red it, but was able to get my bike adjusted correctly using this as a reference. Tip: read the article carefully a couple of times to avoid frustration ;-)

Good luck! Ben
