Fixing brake lever shifters

Howdy folks. Maybe there is already a thread about this somewhere: but in preparation for my x-USA tour this summer I want to replace both the shifter cables and brake cables on my bike. They are the type of shifters that are attached/part of the brake levers. Was just wondering if any of you know any goog guides online or have ever done this yourselves. It doesn't look too complicated, but before I go in for 'bicycle exploratory surgery' I figured I'd ask the locals!

I figure if i don't learn how to do it right here in my driveway, I am gonna have to figure out in East Buttblast, Nevada, which is no fun.

Shimano has pdfs for most of their brake/shifter combos on their website. That's where I found them for both my xt, and deore stuff.

Its simpler to do than you think. Get a decent cable cutter (bike specific) or dremel tool and cut away. Just match the housing length to what's already there and whack in the new cable. There's almost certainly a walk-through on the park tool or sheldon brown website.
