saddle rail spacing

I noticed on a new saddle which I am about to install that the spacing between the rails is about a quarter of an inch narrower than the spacing between the mounting grooves in the seatpost clamp. Is that always the case?

I've never had the problem with several different make saddles and seatposts so it isn't common in my experience. They have all matched up quite accurately.

There is some rare variation out there. The solutions are all pretty low tech - replace one part or the other, or bend something.
