Bottom Bracket removal?

I'm just getting back on the old bike for the first time in years, and the bottom bracket is creaking really bad. I have taken the crank arm off on the gear side. I am unable to remove the other arm and bottom bracket assembly. It is a late 90's trek 8000. Any one able to shed some light on my dilema??

What kind of bottom bracket? Are you using a crank puller?

Is it a square-taper bb spindle? If so, make sure you don't have a washer left in the crankarm. If you use the extractor with the washer in there, it sure isn't going to take the crankarm off. A quick glance to make sure that you're seeing a silver outer square (crank) and a black inner square (bb spindle) will confirm. If you see no squares, then the washer is in the way.

Is it seeming actually stuck, or like you don't have the right tool? Have you tried good ol' fassioned leverage ("cheater pipe")?

the 1990s Trek 8000 came with Shimano Deore DX/LX components.

it's a square-taper BB. Use a crank puller shown below (TL-FC10.jpg) to remove the other crank.

remove the BB cups using a BB tool (BBT-2.jpg). remember that the drive side has a left-hand thread.

ParkTool has the complete drill on bottotm bracket maintenance.
