OK so i took my rear wheel of due to mis-somthing, the wheel isnt strait, the axle is bent, its loose SOMETHING... so i got pics... why so i could find out how to take it apart, iv done it before but i cant remeber how...

The pictures don't help me very much but I'm about 85% confident you are correct in guessing the axle is bent. That's common on freewheel equipped bikes. The way to tell for sure is to completely remove the axle from the hub and try to roll it on a smooth surface. A bike shop will have, or be able to get you, a replacement axle.

To remove the axle you need a box or open end wrench to fit the outer nut on the non-freewheel end and a "cone wrench" to fit the smaller thin flats inboard of that nut. Remove the outer nut and unscrew the cone. The axle should slide out.

You need a specific Shimano freewheel tool to remove the freewheel.

is there any kind of treat ment i should subject apon my rear hub and casette?

any idea what size of a cone wrench i need? i got one for pedals and its too small and i got an other one thats for wheels and its too big... how much should i be paying for a new axle and/or some internals.. bearings and what ever i find in there?

^^^correct. why don't you take the wheel to your LBS and buy the correct cone wrench, chances are that you'll used it again. You can also price out the axel and bearings at that time just so you know what you will be paying.

Its a freewheel, a pain.
Yes disassemble it like that. Park makes a tool to remove the lockring, but you can use a hammer and punch.
Inside the freehwheel is a series of 1/8" (I think) loose ball bearings. It will be two rows if my memory is correct. If you have an Applied Tool nearby, they will sell you bag of 225 for 10 dollars. You will probably lose some so its good to have spares.
When you get the axle out, it may be repairable depending on how badly the bend is. You can use an arbor press of something of the like to straighten it. If its anything more than a little bend I would replace it thoughp

this bike is so old i dont want to spend too much, i spent a lot on cleaning it... first time, and i learned tons... i took the thing apart once, and i counted 7 bearings on one side... in this holder is that holder nessary?

whats an alternative to freewheel?

and what should the axle cost me and maybe ill get some new nuts too. what else is there?

LBS =your Local Bike Store
If you are just checking the axel, you should need to remove the freewheel. Just remove with cone wrench and regular wrench as in your photo and roll the axel on a flat surface to see how straight it is.

Yeah i just gota wait for the "LBS" (gona start using that) to open up... its this sumer party thing and shops are closed for sun and mon ...

lol im gona have to re install my rear wheel to get to the other bike store im waiting to see. its an oficial KONA dealer place...

btw can any one ID the parts you see in the pics... names, specs,

also iv seen this "wrench" with a chain attached and you wrap it around the rear cog(s) and you use it like any wrench (i think) and twist and i dono what hapens i guess you un screw the cogs?

Those wrenches work in pairs and you basically work them in opposite directions starting with the smallest cog. This only removes the cogs not the whole freewheel. Keep going to parttools.com for repair information. It's a great site.

yeah i tried park tools.. it didnt load up for some reson but ths morn it worked fine... and sheldon, iv been reading that stuff for a while, didnt come arosse disasembly the rear hub but im looking... great site btw

Oh i got my parktool DCW-2 cone wrench... didnt try it out yet
i got the right size cuase i went to my not so loacal LBS... 30min ride at top speed and I HATE HEAD WIND its like slaming your breaks... well yeah i went there and im like this place rocks.... and so im like how much for a new wheel w/ hub that fits my rear cogs and hes like 35eu. its a shimano wheel...oh yeah there like sorry no axles so i asked for a wheel lol... and to install the whole thing they want 10 more eu... by that i mean like completly switching wheels, gears tires and all... so my Q is should i buy the wheel and a hub remover (witch they have {parktools}) or let them fix the rear wheel... ill also ask for anew chain at the same time... do you guys think i could do it, like how CAN i mess up.. and IF i can do i want a new rear derailer.... but thats 35 eu...so dono


its this friday that im going there to get the stuff. so tell me what i should do... right now im gona take the hub apart...and see whats going on...

Question, is a slightly bent axle a really big deal? Sure, wheel turns funny, but it's extremely subtle, and there is no brake rub...

I wouldn't trust it. I suspect that the first time you stand on a hill that you'll soon be hearing a growling noise.

As far as changiing the axle goes, If it was my first time I would simply keep good records of how I took it apart.

Really, there isn't much there. You ought to be able to get it back together fairly well.
